Los Angeles, CA – December 15, 2015 – Last week Moogfest announced its tenth and most experiential lineup yet, with more than one-hundred acts featuring Gary Numan, GZA, Odesza, Laurie Anderson and more, taking place in Durham, NC, May 19-22, 2016. For more on the lineup and programming, read our press release here.
On December 5th, Moogfest launched Dial-Tones, a new international event series that offers an exclusive preview of the Moogfest 2016 experience in select cities around the world. The series kicked off in Durham, NC and lands in Los Angeles on Sunday, December 20th. Curated by Moogfest, the Dial-Tones series celebrates the form and frequencies surrounding ambient, drone, and microtonal compositions, as well as the technology behind the art of synthesis. Each event highlights an internationally known artist that calls the host city home, as well as a local community youth organization.
The LA installment of Dial-Tones features a unique performance by famed West Coast producer and Timetable label boss, Nosaj Thing, who will control 12 synthesizers for a long-form drone performance along with WeDidIt founder Shlohmo, Warpaint’s Emily Kokal, dynamic House duo DJ Dodger Stadium, Teebs and D Tiberio. Before the performance, Moog engineers will host two interactive synth building workshops – one for youths, followed by one for adults that sign up at dialtonesla.eventbrite.com. Attendees will participate in an interactive daytime synth building workshop where they will learn analog circuitry under the guidance of a Moog engineer.
For the youth workshop designated for select students, Moogfest has partnered with LA based online radio station dublab (1:30pm start).
“Moogfest is partnering with dublab to broadcast the oscillating sounds of Dial-Tones to you! Listen in on dublab.com starting at 9PM PST for an improv performance curated by Nosaj Thing, featuring Sholomo, Emily Kokal (Warpaint), and many more!”, says Ajay Ravi, General Manager, dublab.
Dial-Tones is daytime synth workshops and nighttime synth drone performances:
The Workshops: During the day, a Moog engineer will facilitate two synth building workshops, where participants of all skill levels will discover the beauty and power of analog circuitry, as well as the principles of subtractive synthesis. LA workshops will take place on the second floor of Ace Hotel in Segovia Hall.
The second workshop (7pm start) is open to the first 20 participants that RSVP at dialtonesla.eventbrite.com. These 20 lucky workshop attendees will also have the opportunity to purchase the following discounted bundles:
(1) the synthesizer built in the workshop, plus a Moogfest 2016 GA ticket for $249 (a $450 value)
(2) the synthesizer built in the workshop, plus a Moogfest 2016 VIP ticket for $499 (a $698 value)
Tune-in to dublab.com on 12/20, 9pm PST to listen to Moogfest Dial-Tones: LA in real-time.
The Performance & After-Party: In these unique performances, an artist will command 12 of the synthesizers built in the workshop to perform an ever-shifting and complex soundscape. Dialing into an improvisational realm of sustained tones and cascading moods, these singular performances, can never be recreated or repeated again. The Dial-Tones after-party will be held on the Ace Hotel Rooftop and hosted by Moogfest 2016 artists YACHT. Additional production support for the event will be provided by LA’s local sound sanctuary Bedrock.LA.
“We’re excited to bring the Moogfest experience across the country to Los Angeles. Attendees will get hands-on instruction from a Moog engineer and will be inspired by building a tool they can then use to create music. The combination of intimate workshop and experimental performance is true to the essence of Moogfest, and is reflective of what will happen in Durham next May.” says Marisa Brickman, Festival Director, Moogfest.
After LA, Moogfest Dial-Tones continues through Portland, San Francisco, New York and London. Other curators to be announced soon.
Exclusive Cassette Tape Series
In partnership with Twin Springs Tapes, Moog Music & Ace Hotel will produce a limited run of cassettes as an end cap to the Dial-Tones series. The tapes will feature recordings from select artists further exploring minimalism & ambient tone clusters. They will be available at Ace Hotel and included in select Moog synthesizer packages.
