Beyond Wonderland 2017 – A ten year retrospective

As I made my entrance into the enchanted wonderland I couldn’t help but realize that I’ve been doing this for exactly ten years. Although the inaugural Beyond Wonderland was held at NOS Events Center in San Bernardino, CA on March 20 2010, I have been following Insomniac’s Events since 2007.

The precursor to Beyond Wonderland was “How Sweet It Is”, which used to take place at The Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles, CA. It’s honestly heartwarming to see an underground production company evolve into the beautiful paradise that it is today.

While the sounds, people, and fashion have changed, the vibe will always remain the same. The quality that makes Beyond Wonderland such an amazing event is more than the atmosphere and music, it’s the fact that everyone is coming together to contribute to the festival environment.

I met one person with awesome “pineapple pizza” totem pole. Although it may not seem festival related, I find it fascinating that this bit of expression is the reason we come to these festivals. We come here to express ourselves through our fashion, dance, lights, music, and to make friendships that will last a lifetime.

Beyond Wonderland is known for providing a heavy hitting Drum & Bass lineup, and that’s the main thing that draws me to this event. Camo & Krooked, DC Breaks, Loadstar, Dieselboy, Drumsound & Bassline Smith, MC Dino, and Tantrum Desire! Each act kept the stage bumping the entire night, but one act stood out above the rest.

The West Coast was blessed by the almighty sounds of Netsky. After a night of filthy bass music, gnarly sounds, and heavy four on the floor break beats and more it was a breath of fresh air to hear the soothing sounds of Netsky and the hospital records crew. The defining moment of his set was when he dropped “Rio”. Everyone got up, cheered, and was ready to dance the night away. At this point the Facemelt crew showed up, and there was a massive pit of flow artists jamming to his music and giving light shows.

After two nights of the enchanted wonderland I was completely completely refreshed, re-set, and overly blessed to have been able to experience another Insomniac Event. After raving for ten years, Beyond Wonderland 2017 felt like my first rave all over again 🙂
